Economic Opportunity

Shared Prosperity Plan

Building an economy that works for all Portlanders.

Downtown

A new chapter for Downtown and Old Town

Develop downtown as a complete neighborhood where people and families want to live, alongside attractions that draw visitors from around the city, the metro area, and the world.

We must move on from the idea that downtown will return to its bygone past as a destination for weekday commuters, with an economy based on rented office space.

Instead, the future downtown is a 24/7 neighborhood with places to live, work, make things, see performances, celebrate Portland's diverse cultures, shop, eat, and experience the city.

Storefronts

Activate vacant storefronts

Work with property owners to place artists, cultural organizations, and pop-up retailers in otherwise dormant commercial spaces, through a master leasing program.

  • Successful tenants become sustainable businesses.
  • An art installation draws visitors and vitality to a neglected block.
  • A building that hosts events and pop-up installations becomes desirable for permanent tenants.
Waterfront

Embrace the Willamette River

  • Prioritize practical improvements to Tom McCall Waterfront Park: pedestrian and bicycle connections to surrounding districts; safe river access; public restrooms and seating; spaces for markets, food vendors, performances, and events.
  • Pursue fun, useful water transportation, such as the Frog Ferry, to connect Portlanders and visitors to destinations along the river.
Local Business

A sustainable local economy built on locally-owned businesses

  • Instead of courting and catering to billionaires and out-of-state corporations, invest in Portland's homegrown businesses.
  • Instead of subsidizing new concert venues owned by multinational corporations, we should support our local music scene!
  • Instead of being coerced by a billionaire into funding luxury renovations at the Moda Center, we should ensure that our public arena remains in great condition, while making it more affordable for Portlanders to attend a wide range of sports, concerts and other events.
  • Provide tax breaks for start-ups and businesses that pay above-standard wages to their employees.

Help build an economy that works for everyone.
