Community Safety

Public Safety Platform

For downtown, Old Town, and every Portland neighborhood. Real safety comes from clean and well-lit streets, a crisis response that actually shows up, neighbors who are protected, and public spaces full of life.

Right-of-Way

Manage the public right-of-way for sanitation, safety and health

  • Collect garbage and keep sidewalks and public spaces clean, through partnerships with organizations that employ houseless Portlanders.
  • Expand, repair, and maintain sidewalks to improve accessibility for pedestrians, wheelchair users, and families with kids.
  • More lighting so everyone can walk, bike and bus confidently, day or night.
  • Design streets to support the events, markets, and programs that bring energy and activity to neighborhoods.
  • Make public restrooms, showers and laundry available throughout the city.
Mental Health

Mental health as public safety

  • Expand Portland Street Response coverage citywide, 24/7, because the program is working and the need outstrips current availability.
  • Unify the crisis response system so that calling 988, calling 911, or talking to community-facing public workers gets the same coordinated response.
  • Fix the pipeline at the state level. Use the City's legislative influence to:
    • Restore intensive care coordination requirements;
    • Fix Medicaid reimbursement;
    • Remove barriers that keep people with severe mental illness out of long-term care programs;
    • Expand mental health treatment services in the metro area.
Immigrants & Refugees

Protect immigrants & refugees

  • Partner with community organizations to deliver legal services.
  • Support a 24/7 network for rapid response to immigration enforcement.
  • Ensure spaces for protection from immigration enforcement at City-owned buildings.
  • Create a municipal ID for residents to access city services, transit, libraries, and financial systems.
Neighborhoods

Enliven our neighborhoods, including downtown!

  • Reduce violence by activating public spaces and changing traffic patterns in high-risk areas.
  • Turn vacant storefronts into incubator spaces for small businesses and artists, bringing more activity and creative energy to neglected areas.

Help build a safer Portland for everyone.
